Meals on wheels History

For over 20 years, Partners in Prime has been delivering hot nutritious meals to home bound older adults in Butler County.  Over the years our name has changed but the concept has not.  Whether you remember us as More Than a Meal, Home Delivered Meals or meals on wheels, you can rest assured that our commitment to tasty meals and excellent service remain the same.

What is meals on wheels?

Meals on wheels is a meals delivery program for older adults who are home bound and can no longer cook or grocery shop for themselves.  The program truly offers More Than a Meal as we educate clients about the importance of proper nutrition, provide a daily check in during delivery and serve as a vital connection to other in-home support services.

With proper nutrition, older adults are able to prevent health deterioration and loss of independence. Our goal is to assist individuals with maintaining a good quality of life at home.

When do clients receive their meal?

The meals are delivered between 10:30am-1:00pm, Monday through Friday. If the client has limited family support, the client may receive two frozen meals plus milk, breads and fruits for Saturday and Sunday. Clients may also receive one hot and one frozen meal daily based on their needs.

What is included in the meals?

Our home delivered meals fit into a diabetic meal plan, and provide 1/3 of your daily nutritional needs or approximately 700 calories per meal. Each meal typically contains 60-80 grams of carbohydrates, with no salt added. We regret that substitutions are not available, due to the large quantity of daily meals prepared.

How can I participate in this program?

Meals on wheels is a service provider for Butler County Elderly Services Program (ESP) and the Pre-Admission Screening System Providing Options and Resources Today (PASSPORT). The Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio is the program administrator for both of these programs. ESP and PASSPORT meals are paid through local and federal funding with a sharing of costs for ESP participants.

Am I eligible to participate in the meals on wheels program?

Passport Eligibility Criteria

An individual MUST:

• Be 60 years of age or older
• Be Medicaid eligible
• Agree to participate
• Require skilled or intermediate level of care
• Be unable to receive services from another resource
• Be assured that their health needs can be met safely in a home setting
• Receive their physicians signature of approval for their service care plan
• Not be enrolled in a hospice program
• Be living in a non-institutional setting
• Not require services that exceed a six-month cost cap established by the state

Butler County ESP Eligibility Criteria

An individual MUST:

• Be 60 years of age for home care services and Home Delivered Meals
• Be a resident of Butler County and live in an approved living environment/facility
• Be impaired in at least two Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and /or Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), and impairments must support need for requested service(s)
• Be unable to receive services from another source such as Medicare, Medicaid, PASSPORT, or private insurance

If you do not qualify for ESP or PASSPORT, meals on wheels also accepts private pay clients. Private pay clients are charged $6.25 per meal. This includes a complete meal and delivery.
